A sewing training centre launched by Bashundhara Shuvosangho in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi is helping underprivileged women become self-reliant through skill development initiatives.
The training centre, which started operations on 1 April, is currently providing sewing lessons to 30 poor women from different villages of the upazila.
Some of the trainees are students, while others are divorced or widowed. Coming from financially struggling families, all of them joined the programme with the dream of becoming self-dependent. Trainer Swapna Aktar is teaching them different techniques of cloth cutting and sewing designs both theoretically and practically. Through needle and thread, the women are now weaving hopes for a better future.
To observe their progress, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman paid a surprise visit to the training centre on Saturday. He was accompanied by central committee member Md Farid Mia.
After learning about the visit, central committee adviser and chief adviser of the Shibpur uzila unit Mahbubur Rahman Monir also joined the programme. Adviser of the unit committee Hanif Mahmud, local social workers Shaheduzzaman Sahed and HM Masum Billah, along with Shamim, Safwan and trainer Swapna, were also present.
The guests toured the training centre and observed the trainees’ work closely. Some women were cutting fabrics, some were preparing blouse designs, while others were operating sewing machines to stitch clothes. The guests expressed satisfaction after witnessing the trainees’ dedication and enthusiasm.
Speaking at the programme, Mahbubur Rahman Monir said, “Continue your efforts and we will remain beside you. Hard work is essential to succeed in life. Bashundhara Shuvosangho will always support you.”
Zakaria Zaman said, “Bashundhara Shuvosangho has been working for the sustainable development of women from poor rural families. Following the directives of the chairman of Bashundhara Group, the organisation is working across districts and upazilas nationwide to help disadvantaged women become self-reliant.”
“If you become self-dependent, the dream of Bashundhara Chairman will be fulfilled. Bashundhara Group and Bashundhara Shuvosangho are moving forward for the welfare of the country and its people,” he added.
Many of the trainees said they previously struggled to manage household expenses. Now they dream of earning independently, supporting their children’s education and standing beside their families. Some hope to open small tailoring shops at home, while others aspire to become entrepreneurs after gaining advanced skills.
