Bashundhara Shuvosangho handed over one month’s food supplies to a destitute elderly lady at Dashami para village, Damurhuda, Chuadanga Sadar Upazila on Friday.
The recipient, Rahima Khatun alias Bulu Khatun, 70, is a widow with no children.
She received 30 food items which included rice, polao rice lentils, edible oil, potatoes, onions, gingers, garlics, soaps, shampoos, sugar, meat and different kinds of spices.
Rahima Khatun had long been living in dire conditions, and became emotional after receiving the food assistance.
She said, “I had been going through very difficult days. Many times, I could not even manage proper meals. They had previously given me a blanket and provided iftar during Ramadan. Today, Shuvosangho has stood by me. I pray for them and ask Allah to bless them. May the organization continue to support more helpless and poor people like me.”
Haji Abdul Kadir, vice-president of Shuvosangho Damurhuda Upazila unit, said, “Rahima Khatun’s smile has inspired us.”
He added that Bashundhara Shuvosangho has previously conducted various humanitarian activities, including distributing leaflets on coronavirus prevention during the pandemic, providing masks and sanitizers, distributing iftar and food among passers-by during Ramadan, arranging blood group testing for students, distributing Eid clothes among madrasa students, distributing winter blankets among 700 people, and providing three months of free sewing training to helpless and abandoned women along with sewing machines to help 20 women become self-reliant.
“We will continue such support in the future as well,” he said.
General Secretary Maksudur Rahman Ratan said, “If wealthy and capable people in society stand beside the helpless, much suffering can be alleviated. Shuvosangho has been working for the welfare of people and such humanitarian initiatives will continue in the future.”
