The Chittagong University unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised an award ceremony for an essay competition marking International Workers’ Day, alongside a reading circle discussion on novelist Imdadul Haq Milon’s book “Char Kajolir Manush.”
The event was held on the university campus, where organisers announced the results of the essay competition and distributed prizes among the winners.
Seven students participated in the competition. Md Zakaria Hossain, a second-year student of the Bangladesh Studies Department, secured first place with 27 marks. Md Mahmudul Hasan, a second-year student of the Arabic Department, achieved second place with 26 marks, while Azizia Salma, a third-year student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture, finished third with 23 marks.
The winners received copies of Imdadul Haq Milon’s books “O Radha O Krishna” and “Poradhinota” as prizes.
Speaking at the event, unit President Jannatul Ferdous said the programme successfully combined the essay competition award ceremony with a literary discussion session. She noted that the participation and collective efforts of members made the event meaningful and successful.
General Secretary Shahriar Munim Sabit said International Workers’ Day teaches people the values of humility, respect for labour and dignity for all professions. He added that such competitions help spread knowledge and inspire students intellectually.
Event Secretary Abu Jihad said the enthusiastic participation of students made the ceremony lively and engaging. He also highlighted that the reading circle created an opportunity for participants to discuss literature and exchange ideas.
Second-place winner Md Mahmudul Hasan expressed his happiness at receiving both recognition and books as prizes. He thanked the organisers and said such initiatives encourage students to learn and develop intellectually.
During the reading circle, participants discussed the narrative continuity, themes, social relevance and portrayal of human realities in Char Kajolir Manush. Several leaders and members of the organisation attended the event, including Vice Presidents Mazharul Islam, Sushanta Roy and Al Mamun, Joint General Secretary Kameli Jannat, Sports Secretary Md Ashikur Islam and other executive members.
Organisers said they plan to continue arranging similar programmes in the future to promote literary practice, reading habits and intellectual development among students.
