Bashundhara Shuvosangho honoured the best readers at its library in Charkhirati village of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur through a monthly award programme aimed at promoting reading habits, knowledge-sharing and moral values.
The award winners received books and environmentally friendly saplings as tokens of appreciation.
The programme was chaired by library president and assistant teacher of Kamargaon Government Primary School Md Farid Mia.
This month’s best reader awards went to Monohardi Government Model High School senior teacher Md Motalib Ahmed, former assistant teacher of Charkhirati Government Primary School Bazlur Rashid Bokul, Class X student Ramim Mia, Class IX student Muntachir Ahmed, and Class VIII students Syed Sayem and Abdullah.
Expressing his gratitude after receiving the award, teacher Motalib Ahmed said regular reading of books and newspapers at the library was helping readers acquire new knowledge and improve their thinking, creativity and personal development.
Library general secretary and organiser Md Shakhawat Hossain said the library has been operating for more than a year and has already created a culture of reading and learning among local youths.
Library president Md Farid Mia said the library was helping people, especially youths, stay away from mobile phone addiction and drugs by encouraging them to read books.
He said the library now has a rich collection of books and five national daily newspapers, benefiting students, job seekers and people from all walks of life.
He also expressed gratitude to Imdadul Haq Milan, adviser to Bashundhara Group and visionary behind Bashundhara Shuvosangho, and Shuvosangho director Zakaria Zaman for establishing the library.
Among others, adviser to the library and lecturer at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Government College Md Mohsin, library general secretary and organiser Md Shakhawat Hossain, Charkhirati Youth Club members Atikul Islam, Fahad Mia, Appel Mahmud, Ismail, Sohel Mia, Ashikul Islam, Riton Mia, Afsar Uddin, Zainal Master and Bokul Mia attended the event alongside local dignitaries, education enthusiasts and regular readers.
