Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a discussion session and a sports contest for day labourers and other low-income working-class people at Saheb Bazar Hawkers Market in Rajshahi on Friday, on the occasion of the World Labour Day.
Speakers said that May Day is not merely a formality; it symbolizes the struggle for workers’ rights. However, the reality is that most working people in the country are still deprived of fair wages, safe working conditions, and social security. Their lives remain marked by hardship and uncertainty.
The event was attended by key discussants Md Shahinur Rahman Munna, president of the Rajshahi Saheb Bazar Professionals’ Association, and Md Parvez, general secretary of the body. They emphasised the importance of collective efforts to protect workers’ rights.
Leaders of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Rajshahi District unit were also present, expressing solidarity with working-class people.
During the discussion session, workers openly spoke about the hardships they face due to rising commodity prices, unsafe working conditions, and uncertainty about the future. Their remarks reflected the harsh realities of their daily struggle for survival.
In the second phase of the event, various recreational games were organized, bringing temporary relief and joy to the workers.
The organizers said that the aim of such events was not only to provide enjoyment but also to spread awareness about workers’ rights and dignity, and to reaffirm Shuvosangho’s commitment to standing by them throughout the year.
The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes among the winners of the sports competitions.
