As the adverse effects of climate change continue to disrupt environmental balance, Bashundhara Shuvosangho has stepped forward with a tree plantation programme in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon to promote environmental protection and a greener future.
The programme was held on Saturday morning at Raghunathpur Sarkarpara Scholar School and College, where students, teachers, and local volunteers took part in the initiative.
As part of the programme, saplings of various species were distributed among students, while trees including krishnachura, kamini, bokul, and jujube were planted across the college campus.
Organisers said the initiative was more than a symbolic event, especially at a time when extreme heat and the growing impact of climate change are making daily life increasingly difficult. They said tree plantation is essential for maintaining ecological balance, reducing temperatures, and preserving biodiversity.
They added that Bashundhara Shuvosangho regularly carries out such activities as part of its social responsibility.
Among those present were Bashundhara Shuvosangho Pirganj upazila unit President Tarek Hossain, General Secretary Delowar Hossain Dulal, members Mutasin Sarkar, Saudi Mahmud, Labu Hossain, Tabassum Saba, Faidun, Hriday, and Sakib.
Also present were Kaler Kantho district correspondent Partha Sarathi Das, Pirganj upazila correspondent Zainal Abedin Babul, and other members of the organisation.
Speaking at the event, unit President Tarek Hossain said Bashundhara Shuvosangho has always been involved in social and humanitarian activities through positive initiatives, and the tree plantation drive was part of that commitment.
“A tree not only enhances the beauty of the environment, it is also one of the key elements for sustaining human life,” he said.
He added that planting trees in educational institutions improves the surroundings while also helping students develop environmental awareness.
“The trees planted today will grow in a few years and provide shade, keep the campus cooler, and create a pleasant environment for students,” he said, urging students to take responsibility for caring for the saplings as well.
Students who took part in the programme expressed enthusiasm, saying they were happy to participate in planting trees and had become more aware of their own role in protecting the environment.
