The Bashundhara Shuvosangho Chuadanga district unit has provided one month’s food assistance to an elderly destitute woman, Suraiya Begum, in a humanitarian initiative.
Suraiya Begum, around 60, of Hajrahati village under Chuadanga Sadar upazila, has been living a life of hardship for decades. She lost her husband and child nearly 35 years ago and has been surviving alone since then. Her only daughter lives with her husband elsewhere, leaving Suraiya without any immediate family support.
She currently lives in a small makeshift hut on someone else’s land, relying entirely on the kindness of neighbours for survival. Due to old age and multiple health complications, she is unable to work and struggles to meet even basic needs, often depending on irregular meals.
Responding to her condition, the Chuadanga unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho provided her with one month’s essential food supplies on Saturday.
The assistance package included rice, lentils, potatoes, onions, oil, sugar, spices, flattened rice, salt, chillies, soap, washing powder and other daily essentials.
Expressing gratitude, Suraiya Begum said she has been living in extreme hardship with no one to look after her. She thanked the Bashundhara Shuvosangho and prayed for the organisation’s well-being.
Chuadanga district unit president of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Advocate ASM Abdur Rouf said supporting underprivileged people is a moral responsibility and such humanitarian activities will continue.
General secretary Hemanta Kumar Singh Roy said the initiative was driven by humanitarian values. He added that earlier the organisation distributed 60 sewing machines and provided free training to help 60 women become self-reliant, along with continued engagement in social issues.
