A discussion on measles prevention and necessary measures was held in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj on Tuesday afternoon.
The event was organised by Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Harirampur upazila unit at Rini Plaza in Jhitka Bazar.
Presided over by Harirampur upazila unit president Sajib Guha Majumdar, the meeting featured Dr Imran Hossain as the main speaker.
Dr Imran said measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads easily from person to person and can pose serious risks to children and pregnant women.
He noted, “Initial symptoms include fever, cold, cough, red eyes and, after a few days, reddish rashes across the body. If neglected, the disease can lead to complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea and even brain infection, which may be fatal.”
He stressed that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles and urged guardians to ensure timely immunisation of children. He also emphasised the importance of isolating infected individuals, maintaining hygiene and taking precautions during coughing or sneezing.
The doctor advised against self-medication and urged patients to seek medical attention promptly, adding that while there is no specific cure for measles, treatment is given based on symptoms.
Speaking at the event, adviser of Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Harirampur upazila unit, Mehedi Hasan Tutul, said the recent rise in measles cases is alarming and called for greater public awareness. He urged people to ensure vaccination and consult doctors immediately if symptoms appear.
The programme, moderated by general secretary Abu Sai (Sayem Khan), was attended by advisers, leaders and members of the organisation, including Shubhonkor Poddar, Md Sajjad Hossain, Ruma Akter, Mohammad Shanto and Md Akash, among others.
