Bashundhara Shuvosangho activists helped administer an oath to school students on their commitment to prevent child marriage at a high school in Gouripur upazila, Mymensingh on Monday.
Manjur Ahmed, senior teacher at Powar Jogendra Kishore High School, administered the oath to around 300 students on the school premises. Headmaster Mizanur Rahman, and other assistant teachers including Sabina Yasmin, Saleha Khatun and Nazmul Islam Rumon were also present among other school staff members.
Headmaster Mizanur Rahman alerted the students about the evils of child marriage and noted that a child can never become educated if the mother remains uneducated. He called on his students to act strictly against child marriages in their area, and to inform law enforcers as well as school teachers whenever they notice that a school mate is being married off.
Shuvosangho Gouripur upazila unit President Shankar Ghosh Pilu said child marriage has many harmful impacts including persistent marital and family discords, stillbirths, maternal deaths, newborn’s disfigurement, among others.
The upazila unit’s General Secretary Harun Mia said only an educated wife can bring light to a family. He also noted the progress made in women’s empowerment and subsequent economic advancement in the country and the world over the decades. To continue this progress curses like child marriage have to be resisted, he said.
