Bashundhara Shuvosangho extended humanitarian support to a destitute elderly man in Bishwambharpur upazila of Sunamganj, easing his long-standing hardship.
Members of the organisation’s upazila unit handed over essential food and daily items to 63-year-old Roich Mia, a resident of Chinakandi village under Dhanpur union, on Sunday morning. They later transported the items to his home by auto-rickshaw.
The support package included 16 essential items such as rice, sugar, lentils, oil, onions, garlic, turmeric, chilli, salt, vermicelli, puffed rice, biscuits, mosquito coils, bathing soap, laundry soap and washing powder. Organisers said the supplies would meet his needs for more than a month.
Local dignitaries, including freedom fighter and former vice chairman Tazzat Ali Khan, attended the programme along with leaders and members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Bishwambharpur unit.
According to organisers, Roich Mia has survived on begging for years and lives alone in a small makeshift shelter built with bamboo and tarpaulin on borrowed land. He suffers from age-related illnesses, struggles to walk with a stick and often cannot afford proper meals or medical care.
Roich said he sometimes breaks his fast with only water and puffed rice when neighbours cannot help. He added that he has no family support and relies entirely on charity for survival.
Local residents said they try to assist him within their means but urged the government and wealthy individuals to step forward with further support.
Roich expressed gratitude to Bashundhara Shuvosangho and prayed for the well-being of its members, hoping such assistance would continue in the future.
