Bashundhara Shuvosangho hosted a discussion session at Barhatta Public Library, Barhatta upazila in Netrokona on Wednesday morning.
Azizul Haque Faruq, journalist and president of Shuvosangho’s Barhatta upazila unit, presided over the discussion session while Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mosammat Zinia Zaman was present as chief guest, and Barhatta Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Nazmul Hasan was present as the special guest.
The speakers said that the then Pakistani ruling regime planned Operation Searchlight on 17 March 1971, with the aim of crushing the Bangladeshi nation’s dream of independence at its very inception through intimidation.
On 25 March, they opened fire on sleeping people, killing thousands of men and women. But the barbaric regime’s expectations were not fulfilled. Bangladeshis are not a nation to be suppressed. They resisted. Finally, after just nine months of war, they snatched the country’s independence.
“We must all work to uphold and implement this spirit,” the discussants added.
