Bashundhara Shuvosangho Gaibandha district unit distributed iftar items among underprivileged men and women during Ramadan as part of its humanitarian activities.
The distribution took place on Sunday following a discussion on the significance of Ramadan held at the local Surbani Sangsad office.
Members of the organisation later distributed iftar packages among 40 underprivileged people along DB Road and nearby areas of the district town.
The distribution programme was formally inaugurated by Gaibandha district BNP General Secretary Mahamudun Nabi Titul.
Among others present were Gaibandha Press Club General Secretary Idrisuzzaman Mona, Kaler Kantho district correspondent Amitabh Das Himun and members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
Rabeya Khatun, 40, from Paschim Komornoy area of Kholahati Union under Sadar upazila, said she had been going door to door seeking assistance for Eid.
She said her four-member family, including her agricultural labourer husband, had little work during Ramadan and were struggling to manage sehri and iftar meals. Receiving the food package brought her much relief, she added.
Golzar Rahman, 67, a night guard at a private organisation, said he had struggled to observe fasting throughout the month due to financial hardship and had received little assistance this year.
After receiving the iftar package, he expressed his gratitude and said he would pray for the volunteers.
Speaking on the occasion, BNP leader Mahamudun Nabi Titul said he was familiar with the various humanitarian activities of Bashundhara Shuvosangho and appreciated the initiative taken by its members to distribute iftar items, even if only for a day.
He added that young people could draw inspiration from such social initiatives supported by Bashundhara Group.
Gaibandha district Bashundhara Shuvosangho General Secretary Ahsania Tasnim Snigdha said the initiative aimed to help people who had lost income during Ramadan so they could at least have a proper iftar meal and observe their religious duties with some comfort.
She added that volunteers personally identified people in need before distributing the packages.
Earlier, a discussion on the significance of Ramadan was held with former district president Humayun Ahmed Biplob in the chair.
Speakers included district President Ahsan Azim Pradhan, Sadullapur upazila President AJ Ashik Shawon, Saghata upazila President Nahidul Islam and district committee member Liza Sarker.
