Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised an awareness programme in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur to help prevent rape and violence against women, highlighting the message of compassion, humanity and self-purification during the holy month of Ramadan.
The programme was arranged on Friday (13 March) in front of the Gangachara Press Club under the initiative of the Gangachara upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
Held shortly before iftar, the event called for fostering humanity, morality and mutual respect in society.
As part of the programme, posters carrying awareness messages were displayed at different important roads and public gathering spots, emphasising the need to build social resistance against rape, violence against women and other forms of abuse.
Organisers said Ramadan is a month of self-restraint, morality and human values. They noted that raising awareness against injustice and promoting a humane society during this period is particularly important.
President of the Gangachara upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, Asaduzzaman, said rape and violence against women are not just crimes but alarming reflections of moral degradation in society.
Preventing such offences requires not only legal enforcement but also social awareness and moral education, he added, urging families, educational institutions and individuals to play responsible roles.
General Secretary Nazrul Islam said engaging the youth in constructive activities could significantly reduce social crimes. He noted that Bashundhara Shuvosangho has been conducting different humanitarian, social and awareness programmes across the country, and the initiative in Gangachara is part of that continued effort.
Among those present were adviser Abdul Bari Swapan, vice-presidents Raihan Kabir and Mirajul Islam, women affairs secretary Jui Akter, and members Shanu Akter, Tamanna Akter, Ratan Mia, Sajib Khan, Nirmal Roy and Shafiquzzaman Sohel of the Gangachara upazila branch.
Apart from members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, local conscious citizens, students and young people also joined the programme.
