Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Ananda Mohan College unit has organised a discussion and iftar gathering on Tuesday under the theme “No Unnecessary Antibiotics, Let Society Be Aware”.
The event took place at Pathgriho Cafe on CK Ghosh Road in Mymensingh town on Tuesday.
Md Sadanand Sarkar, a fourth-year student at Mymensingh Medical College, addressed the event as the chief discussant.
He said that antibiotics, once revolutionary in treating deadly infections, are losing effectiveness due to misuse. He warned that indiscriminate use for mild ailments like fever, cold, or sore throat -- often without medical advice -- leads to antimicrobial resistance, making future infections harder to treat.
He cited WHO warnings that common infections could become life-threatening if the trend continues, noting that antibiotics are increasingly ineffective against diseases such as TB, pneumonia, typhoid, and gonorrhea.
Md Atikur Rahman, associate professor of Botany at Ananda Mohan College and adviser to the college unit Shuvosangho, stressed the role of educational institutions and youth in raising awareness.
He said proper use of antibiotics and adherence to medical advice are essential for public health, and awareness initiatives like this could have a positive societal impact.
Delwar Hossain, co-coordinator of Adhikar Project–2 (BRAC), spoke as a special discussant, expressing concern over the growing risk of antibiotic resistance.
He highlighted statistics from national media, urging campaigns to educate rural populations and pharmacies on rational antibiotic use, while praising Bashundhara Shuvosangho for its work in this area.
Nafiul Hasan Mubin, president of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Ananda Mohan College unit, said that informed youth can play a key role in disseminating correct information and reducing misuse of antibiotic.
