Bashundhara Shuvosangho has provided essential food items and Eid gifts to Mariam Begum, an underprivileged woman in Manpura upazila of Bhola who has been observing fasts during Ramadan despite severe hardship.
Members of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Manpura upazila unit handed over the food and Eid items to her on Monday afternoon.
Mariam Begum lives in the Old Colony area of Ward No. 1 under Hajirhat Union in the upazila. Burdened by old age and poverty, her life has turned into a constant struggle. Despite having two sons, she receives neither support nor regular communication from them. She lives alone in a dilapidated house and lacks even basic clothing. Occasionally, sympathetic neighbours extend help, allowing her to survive.
Her suffering becomes more visible during the holy month of Ramadan. Many days she observes fasts without food or after eating very little. Sometimes she manages to have sehri from nearby houses, while at other times she breaks her fast with small amounts of food given by neighbours.
Despite the hardship, she has continued observing fasts during Ramadan, a determination that is commendable though her situation remains heartbreaking.
After learning about her plight, Bashundhara Shuvosangho stepped forward with humanitarian assistance. The organisation provided her with essential food items sufficient for a month along with Eid gifts.
The items included rice, potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, cooking oil, milk, sugar, dates, onions and garlic, along with other essential food and iftar items.
President of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Manpura upazila unit Fazle Rabbi, General Secretary Abdur Rahman Soyeb, Joint General Secretary Jihad Munshi, Organising Secretary Tamzid Ahmed Sami, Hospitality Affairs Secretary Zafrul Islam Ayat, Social Welfare Secretary Md Siam, Information and Technology Affairs Secretary Abdullah Al Ahad and other members of the organisation were present at the time.
Receiving the assistance, an emotional Mariam Begum said, “I am very happy to receive these food items from Bashundhara Shuvosangho and grateful to the Chairman of Bashundhara Group,” she said.
She also prayed for the continued success of Bashundhara Group so that it can keep supporting poor and distressed people.
