Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a discussion on women’s empowerment at Carmichael College in Rangpur on Sunday, marking International Women’s Day.
Students and members of the organisation joined the event and discussed women’s role in social progress, education and leadership.
Speakers said a developed and prosperous society requires equal participation of men and women.
They stressed that ensuring women’s access to education, employment and social security would accelerate the country’s overall development.
Sajib Sarkar, general secretary of Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Carmichael College unit, Sabikun Nahar Shimla, a member of the organisation, and Saiful Islam, adviser of Bashundhara Shuvosangho and a lecturer of the History Department at Carmichael College, addressed the programme.
Other attendees included the organisation’s vice-president Jannatul Ferdous Asha and members.
Sajib Sarkar said the Shuvosangho unit at Carmichael College regularly conducts activities every month.
He said the discussion organised on International Women’s Day aimed to encourage women to move forward and strengthen their role in society.
He also stressed the need for greater social awareness and stronger family and institutional support to advance women’s empowerment.
Sabikun Nahar Shimla urged women to become aware of their rights and move forward with confidence in education and the workplace.
She said women’s development leads to the development of society and the country.
Saiful Islam told students that equal contributions from women and men have shaped human civilisation.
Quoting a famous line from National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s poem Nari, he said the poet highlighted the equal role of women and men in creating the world’s great achievements.
The organisers later held an iftar gathering, where participants offered special prayers for the welfare of the country and the nation.
