A discussion on the importance of religious and moral values in university life was held at the University of Barishal marking the 11th day of the holy month of Ramadan.
The programme was organised on Sunday at the university’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) by the Barishal University unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
The event concluded with an iftar and special prayers arranged by the organisation.
Speakers at the discussion emphasised that university life is not limited to academic learning alone.
They said moral integrity, humanity and religious values play a vital role in the holistic development of a student. Education confined only to the acquisition of knowledge is not sufficient to build strong character or contribute meaningfully to society.
They stressed that alongside academic curricula, the practice of moral values, compassion, social responsibility and empathy helps establish a strong foundation in students’ personal and social lives.
Referring to Ramadan, the speakers noted that the month teaches self-restraint, patience, sacrifice and compassion—qualities that positively influence students’ mental and social development.
They added that if university students apply these ethical and religious principles in their daily lives, they will grow not only as knowledgeable individuals but also as responsible and humane members of society.
President of the organisation’s Barishal University unit, Tanzid Shah Jalal Emon, said Ramadan is a month of self-purification that teaches patience, restraint and mutual compassion.
He remarked that students who embrace religious and moral values will be better equipped to contribute to the welfare of the country and society.
General Secretary Mehrab Hossain said religious values help shape individuals into responsible and honest citizens.
He added that moral practice alongside academic studies enhances leadership qualities and social accountability among students.
Among those present were Organisational Secretary Arif Hossain, Finance Secretary Md Abu Ubaida, Office Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun, and members including Sadman Hossain Sifat, Zakia Sultana Shimu, Nur Islam Niyon, Shamima, Rezwan Mina, Ummiya Akter Urmi, Mosaddikur Rahman Sifat, Oliullah, Shahidul Islam, Farzana Iqbal Ithila, Ayesha Akter and Md Mamunur Rashid Shubhra.
The programme concluded with special prayers seeking the overall welfare of the country, the nation and the university.
The event was held in a solemn, sincere and festive atmosphere.
