Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a special programme at Rabindra University on Saturday to pay solemn tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.
Marking Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day, the event titled “Presentation of 21 Poems” commemorated the heroism of the martyrs through poetry recitation, a discussion session, and songs.
The programme, held in front of the Shaheed Minar located at Academic Building-3 of the university, was filled with youthful enthusiasm.
At the event, reflecting the spirit of the Language Movement, 21 selected poems were recited by students from various departments, including Jewel Rana, Rakesh Roy and Jannatul Suman from the Bangla department; Ganesh Chandra Roy from the management department; Rupom Adhikari and Chaiti Gupta Payel from the music department.
Each verse vividly portrayed the turbulent days of 1952 and the deep affection of the Bengali people for their mother tongue.
Following the poetry recitation, a brief discussion was held. Student Rishat Sharmin from the Bangla department quoted American writer Rita Mae Brown, saying, “Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.”
Ferdous Hossain, a student of the music department, said, “Youth have always raised their voices against injustice, and the blood-soaked struggle of 1952 inspired people to fight in the Liberation War of 1971.”
Shuvosangho’s Rabindra University President Sanjida Shila, said, “Bashundhara Shuvosangho always dreams of changing society through positive initiatives. Ekushey means not bowing down, and the inspiration to live with our heads held high. The students of Rabindra University conveyed that message through the rhythm of poetry.”
After the discussion, the cultural segment began. Mom Roy, a student of the music department, performed a song. In addition, the timeless Ekushey song “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February” was performed, and everyone present joined in the chorus, creating an emotional atmosphere.
Shuvosangho’s Rabindra University Treasurer Jewel Rana moderated the event, which was coordinated by General Secretary Shahed Akter and Organising Secretary Akash Roy.
