Ahead of Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day, the Shyampur thana unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a cleaning and beautification programme at the Shaheed Minar, paying deep tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.
The programme, held on Friday (20 February), was an emotional and responsible initiative inspired by the spirit of Ekushey. It was implemented under the direction of Abdul Hannan Milton, coordinator of Dhaka Metropolitan South, and led by Monir Hossain, president of the Shyampur thana unit, along with General Secretary Raihan Uddin.
Several office-bearers and members actively participated in the event, including Vice President Tithi Khondokar, Organising Secretary Tofayel, Information and Technology Secretary Rabbi, Joint General Secretary Sumaiya, Women and Children Affairs Secretary Mehenaz, Religious Affairs Secretary Labib, Sports Secretary Badal, and Social Welfare Secretary Tofayel. Other members—Miraj, Mahatir, Redowan, Faruk Tausif, Kamal, Shuvro, and many more—also joined the programme with enthusiasm.
Each brick and wall of the Shaheed Minar bears the immortal memory of the 1952 Language Movement. In honouring that history and expressing their deep love for the Bengali language, volunteers cleaned the premises with their own hands, removed dust and debris, and enhanced its aesthetic appeal with colourful touches.
The initiative was not merely a cleanliness drive; it was a heartfelt expression of respect, love, and responsibility toward the sacrifices of the language martyrs.
Members of Shuvosangho stated, “Our mother tongue Bangla was achieved through the blood of the language martyrs. It is our moral and social duty to uphold the dignity of this language and preserve the sanctity of the Shaheed Minar.”
Through this programme, the organisation reaffirmed its commitment to inspiring the younger generation with the history of the Language Movement, patriotism, and a sense of social responsibility.
Paying humble tribute to the martyrs, members recited the iconic line: “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari?”
The humanitarian and patriotic initiative by the Shyampur thana unit of Shuvosangho has been widely appreciated by local residents, reminding all of the enduring spirit of Ekushey.
