Bashundhara Shuvosangho has launched a three-month sewing training programme in Adamdighi upazila of Bogura with the aim of making underprivileged women self-reliant.
The programme was inaugurated on Saturday (Feb 7) at the New Uday Kindergarten School premises in the Santahar Hatkhola area.
The training centre was formally opened by Nazrul Islam, adviser to the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Adamdighi upazila unit.
A total of 20 underprivileged women and students are participating in the programme, which will be conducted free of cost.
An experienced sewing instructor has been appointed, and classes will be held regularly on Fridays and Saturdays.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Adamdighi upazila unit President Aminul Islam Sumon said the initiative aims to empower financially disadvantaged women.
He added that upon completion of the training, each participant will receive a sewing machine from Bashundhara Shuvosangho to enable them to earn an income from home.
Nazrul Islam said Bashundhara Shuvosangho, with the financial support of Bashundhara Group, has been implementing various social development programmes across the country.
He noted that economic empowerment of women can bring positive changes to families and society.
One of the trainees, Sweeti Begum, said she lost her husband several years ago and has since struggled to support her family.
She expressed optimism that the sewing training would help her become financially independent.
Santahar Press Club President Zillur Rahman praised the initiative, saying the programme would provide poor women with an opportunity to achieve economic self-reliance, noting that true empowerment of women is not possible without financial independence.
