Marking Language Month in February, Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a Bangla alphabet competition in Dhaka on Saturday to promote respect, love and awareness for the Bangla language.
The event was held in Kafrul on Saturday with the aim of fostering a deep attachment to the mother tongue among children and instilling the spirit of the 1952 Language Movement in the younger generation.
Child students took part in the competition, showcasing their language skills and creativity through alphabet writing, correct pronunciation, proper spelling and presentation.
The lively participation of the children made the programme festive and vibrant.
Speakers at the event said Bangla is not only a means of communication but also a symbol of national identity, history and collective consciousness.
They stressed that honouring the right to the mother tongue, achieved through the Language Movement, requires encouraging children to engage in language learning from an early age, with proper practice of the alphabet being the foundation of that process.
They also noted that in the current technology-driven era, children are increasingly drifting away from Bangla, making initiatives such as alphabet competitions crucial in sustaining interest in the language.
Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho said that as part of its social responsibility, the organisation conducts educational, literary, cultural and humanitarian activities across the country, and that the alphabet competition was organised to highlight the importance of the mother tongue and the history of the Language Movement.
At the end of the programme, prizes and certificates were distributed among the participating children. Parents and local dignitaries were present and praised the initiative, saying such activities contribute positively to children’s mental development and language practice.
