Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Gaibandha district unit has donated essential medicines to an old age home in a humanitarian gesture aimed at supporting neglected and underprivileged senior citizens.
The initiative was carried out on Friday afternoon at Meherunnesa Old Age Home in Chhoto Sohagi area of Ward No 3 under Gobindaganj upazila.
Medicines were distributed among elderly men and women residing at the home to treat common ailments, including fever, diarrhoea, cough, dysentery, pain and gastric complications.
Those present from Bashundhara Shuvosangho Gaibandha unit included Humayun Ahmed Biplob, Swarna Roy, Azmain Mahtab, Rimi Akter, Jerin Akter, Shahnaz Akter and Raktim Sparsho.
Representatives of the old age home included Md Apel Mahmud, founder director; Md Shamchu Joha, general secretary; and Mehedi Hasan, an executive member.
A total of 39 elderly people currently reside at the home, including 16 men and 25 women. Expressing gratitude, the residents said access to regular treatment and medicines often becomes difficult in old age, and such support brings much-needed relief.
The authorities of the old age home praised the initiative, saying that if affluent individuals and social organisations come forward in this manner, the quality of life of disadvantaged elderly people would improve significantly.
Representatives of Bashundhara Shuvosangho said standing beside marginalised and deprived people is the organisation’s core objective, adding that similar initiatives in education, health and humanitarian support will continue in the future.
