Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Islamic University (IU) unit organized a discussion titled “Our Responsibilities in Protecting Women’s Dignity and Preventing Violence” among students on Wednesday.
The discussion was held at the university’s Diana Square. Besides, the organization also conducted drug awareness campaigns among students at the TSC area and Bot Tola on the campus.
Among those present were Nazmul Hossain, social welfare secretary of Bashundhara Shuvosangho IU unit; Farhad Khadem, joint finance secretary; Tanim Tanvir, office secretary of the University Journalists’ Association; and members Arif Billah, Manik Hossain, Mehedi Hasan and Runa Laila, along with students from different departments.
Addressing the students, Nazmul Hossain discussed issues related to protecting women’s dignity, preventing violence against women and raising awareness about drugs. He highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse spreading across the country, society and educational institutions.
He also spoke about eve-teasing, oppression and violence against women, explaining how women’s dignity can be upheld and the serious consequences of such crimes. Nazmul further briefed students on available legal remedies and ways to seek justice in cases of violence and abuse.
He said, “Violence against women and cyber bullying have increased in recent times, particularly on social media platforms. Women are often targeted through hateful posts and comments, which disrupt their normal lives.”
“However, awareness about legal remedies remains very limited. Many are unaware of the laws and how to seek protection. Collective efforts are essential to prevent these crimes and build a safe country for women. At the same time, we must work together to curb the spread of drugs,” he said.
Law department student Hira Manik said women constitute a large portion of the country’s population, yet Bangladesh has failed to ensure a safe environment for them.
“Women are continuously facing violence. We must become aware of legal issues and work together to address these problems,” she said.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho IU unit president Munjurul Islam Nahid said the program aimed to create awareness among students about violence against women and drug-related crimes.
With the slogan ‘Shuvo kaje shobar pashey’ (Beside everyone in good deeds), Bashundhara Shuvosangho has been carrying out regular positive initiatives and will continue such activities in the future, he added.
