A workshop on the role and responsibilities of teachers in protecting students from child marriage and the harmful effects of drugs was held in Amtali upazila of Barguna on Wednesday.
Amtali upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised the workshop at 11am at the library hall of Chalabhanga Secondary School.
Al Amin Babu, adviser to the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Amtali upazila unit, presided over the programme. Among others, organisation members Kamrul Hasan Simon, Nazmul Hasan, Md Nasir Gazi and Miraj Sikder were present.
From the school, head teacher Shahnaz Parvin, assistant head teacher Md Monirul Islam, and assistant teachers Md Rasedul Islam, Md Jasmin Uddin, Abdullah Al Mamun, Md Mehedi Hasan, Md Shahidul Islam, Shahabuddin, Fatema Parvin and Sultana Yasmin, along with other teachers and staff, took part in the workshop.
Addressing the occasion, speakers said child marriage and drug addiction have become major threats to society, disrupting the physical and mental development of adolescents and causing serious setbacks in their education, with many students dropping out of school.
They also noted that drug abuse is increasing incidents of violence, crime and premature death in families and society.
The discussion highlighted the specific responsibilities of teachers. Speakers said teachers can use classrooms as effective platforms for awareness by informing students about the legal aspects of child marriage, the harmful effects of drugs, health risks and their negative impact on future life, alongside regular lessons.
They added that open discussions, real-life examples and moral education can play a vital role in raising students’ awareness.
