Universal Pictures has officially shifted the release date for Shrek 5, the much-anticipated next chapter in DreamWorks Animation's popular franchise. Originally set for release on July 1, 2026, the film is now scheduled to hit theaters on December 23, 2026.
While there is currently no direct competition on its release day, Shrek 5 will now open in the same month as two other major films: 20th Century Studios' Ice Age 6 and Warner Bros.' upcoming release, reports comingsoon.net.
Due to the delay of Shrek 5, Illumination Entertainment’s Minions 3 has been rescheduled to an earlier release in July 2026. The Despicable Me spin-off was originally set to release on June 30, 2027.
Shrek 5 will be directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn from screenplay written by Michael McCullers.
The new installment comes after over a decade since the theatrical release of Shrek Forever After. The sequel will once again feature the voices of returning cast members Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. Further details about its plot and new characters are still being kept under wraps. It is produced by Christopher Meledandri, Gina Shay, and John Swanson.
After the success of the Puss in Boots movies, DreamWorks Animation is now working on a Donkey spin-off film with Eddie Murphy. The movie will be released after Shrek 5. Since its start in 2001, the Shrek franchise, including its spin-offs, has earned more than $4 billion worldwide at the box office.
