National Citizen Party (NCP) is set to submit its primary reform proposals to the National Consensus Commission on Sunday.
In its proposal they are going to recommend lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 years and the minimum age for candidates from 25 to 23 years.
Sarwar Tushar, joint convener of the party, initiated by the Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, said this while addressing a press conference, held at its central office in Dhaka on Saturday.
He said his party will present the proposal to the National Consensus Commission on Sunday, seeking its approval in this regard.
Mentioning that the constitution is not effective after the mass uprising, he said: “NCP believes that the next election should be for the Constituent Assembly.”
He furthered that after completing the constitutional reforms, this Constituent Assembly will be converted into a Legislative Assembly after a certain period of time.
Highlighting the stake of Gen-Z in the uprising, he said: “It is irrational that Gen-Z won’t be able to give their mandate in the upcoming election because of their age barrier.”
Sarwar Tushar disagrees with the constitutional reform commission on setting the minimum age for candidature as the commission wants to fix it at 21. Tushar said: “NCP believes that the minimum age for candidature could be 23.”
