India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that efforts are being made to normalize relations with Bangladesh's current interim government, but the internal circumstances in the country are preventing it.
He made these remarks while speaking to India's Consultative Committee on External Affairs on Saturday.
The committee has been formed with members of parliament from most political parties. Among those present at the meeting were Congress's Manish Tewari, Mukul Wasnik, Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi, Tamil Nadu's Vaiko, and several others.
After the meeting, the foreign minister tweeted that discussions were held regarding Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
According to sources, during the meeting, members of parliament inquired, "Did the Indian government not know about the increasing unrest against Sheikh Hasina's government?" In response, S. Jaishankar said that the Indian government had provided the relevant information, but Sheikh Hasina ignored it.
He did not provide a direct answer to who is behind the students in Bangladesh but hinted at China.
The MPs were not satisfied with his response. Questions also arose regarding border security. The minister stated that efforts are being made to curb illegal activities along the border.
He further mentioned, "Attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh are ongoing. The Bangladesh government has been repeatedly urged to take action. We hope they will take appropriate measures."
