BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that to build a new Bangladesh, the countrymen must return to the democratic process.
“We have fought to return the ownership of the people of Bangladesh. The main carrier for returning this ownership is elections. There is no alternative. Those who seek an alternative path are working against the sacrifices of the people of Bangladesh,” he said.
He made these remarks on Saturday as the chief guest at a discussion and Iftar Mahfil organized by Chattogram City BNP for journalists in the port city.
Chattogram City BNP Convener Ershad Ullah presided over the discussion while Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain, central BNP leader Shamsul Islam, former General Secretary of Chattogram City BNP Abul Hashem Bakkar, and BNP leaders -- Shawkat Azam Khawaja, Kamrul Islam, among others, addressed it.
Amir Khasru said, "Sheikh Hasina ruled Bangladesh without elections. She had taken away the people's ownership, voting rights, and constitutional and democratic rights. Earlier, Sheikh Hasina had taken away the people's right to vote. Now, another group is trying to seize voting rights through different means, obstructing people's rights. The countrymen will resist their efforts. A democratic and fair election will restore these rights for the people of Bangladesh. The election schedule must be announced so that the people of the country can prepare for it."
