Train services resumed on Wednesday after Bangladesh Railways’ running staff called off a 26-hour strike. The decision followed a late-night meeting between Railways Adviser Fouzul Kabir, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and running staff representatives, reports UNB.
Md Mojibur Rahman, general secretary of the Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Workers' Union, announced the strike’s withdrawal at 2:45 AM. “The adviser has assured us that our demands will be addressed through the finance ministry by Wednesday. We don’t want public suffering and regret the inconvenience caused,” he said, urging staff to return to work.
Following the announcement, train operations gradually resumed. The Khulna and Dhaka-bound Sagardari and Madhumati trains departed Rajshahi station at 6:05 AM and 6:50 AM, respectively. Meanwhile, the Banalata Express left Chapainawabganj for Rajshahi later in the morning.
Despite the resumption, passenger numbers were low due to the late-night notice of the strike's resolution.
The running staff had begun their indefinite strike on Monday at midnight, demanding special post-retirement allowances and other benefits.
