Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum on Wednesday urged people to respect those who stand for democracy, as the nation commemorated the 34th martyrdom anniversary of Dr. Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s anti-autocratic movement.
Speaking to reporters after placing a wreath at Dr. Milon’s grave, Nurjahan Begum also reflected on the sacrifices made during the anti-discrimination student movement against autocracy, reports UNB.
“During the movement, many mothers were left bereaved,” she said.
“No mother should have to endure such pain again. We all must contribute from our respective positions to ensure the welfare of the country.”
The day, marked as Shaheed Dr. Milon Day, saw observances across Bangladesh as socio-cultural and political organizations, alongside professional bodies, organized various programs to honor his memory and legacy.
On November 27, 1990, Dr. Milon, then the joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and a teacher at Dhaka Medical College, was assassinated by gunmen near TSC on Dhaka University campus.
He was on his way to a meeting aimed at intensifying the movement against the autocratic regime of HM Ershad.
Dr. Milon’s tragic death became a catalyst for the anti-autocracy movement, galvanizing public sentiment and propelling the protests to new heights.
Within weeks, the widespread demonstrations forced Ershad to resign, ending his autocratic rule.
