Saber Hossain Chowdhury, former Forest and Environment Minister, has been granted bail in six different cases, related to the anti-discrimination movement.
On Tuesday, Ziadur Rahman, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate granted bail in two cases. Furthermore, Mehedi Hasan, the metropolitan magistrate, granted bail in four cases.
As bail has been granted in all cases, Saber Hossain Chowdhury will be released from jail. Two years ago, during a police raid at the BNP office, Moksud (a BNP activist) was shot to death by police. In that case, the former Forest and Environment Minister was taken on a five-day remand. On Tuesday, he was presented before the court.
Nazmul Hasan, the Sub-Inspector and the investigation officer of the case, requested that the former minister should be kept in jail without completing the remand. It was also mentioned that Mr Saber was unable to answer any questions that were asked during interrogation. He is physically unwell and has heart disease, with three stents placed in his heart. Given the circumstances, it is unlikely that he will give any useful information from further interrogation. Therefore, following the court’s instructions, he was sent to jail without completing the remand. Depending on his health, the police will apply for remand again in the future. On the other hand, the defense lawyer sought bail although it was opposed by the state. In the end, the court decided to grant bail.
Inspector Asaduzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Prosecution Division stated, “As the bail has been granted in all cases, Saber Hossain Chowdhury can be released. As he is currently in the court’s custody, he will be freed on bail from there.”
