Dhaka court has placed former Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on a five-day remand in connection with the murder of BNP activist Mokbul in 2022, reports UNB.
The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque after investigation officer Nazmul Hasan, a sub-inspector at Paltan Model Police Station, presented Chowdhury in court and requested a 10-day remand for further investigation.
Saber Hossain, former MP, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from the Gulshan area of the capital on Sunday.
The murder case traces back to December 2022, when the BNP announced a political program supporting their one-point demand. This announcement followed a police raid on the BNP’s Naya Paltan office on December 7, led by former DB chief Harun-Or-Rashid and DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker. The raid involved police using force, charging at BNP members with batons, and firing shots, resulting in several injuries, including Mokbul.
Mokbul was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Later he died.
On September 30, Abbas Ali, a former member of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal central committee, filed a murder case against 256 individuals, including several top Awami League leaders and multiple police officials. Additionally, around 400 unidentified individuals were named in the complaint.
