Fire broke out at an oil tanker of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), “Banglar Shourabh” at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port on Saturday, five days after a deadly explosion and fire on “Banglar Jyoti”.
As of 2:00 AM on Saturday, 36 of the 50 crew members had been rescued by the Coast Guard, reports The Daily Star.
Captain Md Jahirul Hoque, the zonal commander of the Coast Guard East Zone said that the fire started around 12:50 AM.
The vessel, carrying crude oil from a larger tanker at sea, was preparing to head to Chittagong port to unload its cargo when the fire broke out. Quoting crew members, Zahirul mentioned that 14 crew members jumped into the sea to escape the flames.
Several Coast Guard tugboats were deployed to rescue the crew, and a firefighting tugboat was actively working to extinguish the fire. Tugboats from the Chittagong Port Authority were also dispatched to assist in the operation.
It should be noted that this incident follows the explosion on September 30, which killed three people aboard the "Banglar Jyoti".
