A Madaripur court on Saturday cleared BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman of defamation charges, reports Daily Sun.
On 15 December 2014, during a speech in London, the BNP leader termed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman “a big Razakar” for having himself banned Awami League.
About a week later, a pro-Awami League lawyer filed a case against Tarique with Madaripur Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court over his “derogatory remark” against the Father of the Nation.
On Saturday, the court’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Obhijit Chowdhury acquitted Tarique in the case, in response to a plea filed in this regard on 7 August.
Advocate Golzar Ahmed Chishty, general secretary of Madaripur District Bar Association, moved in favour of Tarique during Saturday’s court proceedings.
