Awami League candidate former Chhatra League President Mahmud Hasan Ripon has won the Gaibandha-5 constituency by-polls.
Ripan bagged 78,285 votes while his nearest candidate Jatiya Party's AHM Golam Shaheed Ranju got 44,752 votes.
Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam announced the result after counting the votes around 8:30 pm on Wednesday.
The polling in Gaibandha-5 constituency by-polls was held through electronic voting machines (EVMs) amid festivity and tight security.
The voting has begun at 8:30 am and continued till 4:30 pm without any break at 145 centres.
The number of voters was 339,743 in the by-polls.
Awami League candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon, Jatiya Party candidate AHM Golam Shaheed Ranju, Bikalpa Dhara candidate Advocate Jahangir Alam, independent candidate Nahiduzzaman Nishad and Syed Mahbubur Rahman contested in the polls.
Earlier on October 12, the EC suspended the by-election midway in the wake of the massive irregularities in many polling centres.
The Gaibandha-5 constituency fell vacant following the death of lawmaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Fazle Rabbi Miah on July 22, 2022.
