BNP is sitting at an emergency meeting following the detention of the party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas by the law enforcement agencies.
The meeting started at 11: 20 am on Friday.
BNP acting chairperson Tareque Rahman is presiding over the meeting connecting through the virtual platform.
Party’s media cell member Shamsuddin Didar confirmed the matter.
The meeting will discuss the next action of plans of the party ahead of Saturday’s rally in the capital, he added.
Earlier in the day, BNP alleged that detective police detained Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas early Friday.
BNP media wing member Shairul Kabir Khan said both leaders were detained from their houses around 3 am.
Additional Police Commissioner and chief of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Harun-Ur-Rashid said they have been taken to the DB office for interrogation.
He revealed the information to the media on Friday morning.
On Wednesday afternoon, police detained BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dhaka city north BNP convener Amanullah Aman, BNP’s publicity secretary and media cell member Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Swecchasebak Dal general secretary Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Juel from Naya Paltan.
They were detained by law enforcement agencies during the clash between BNP activists and the police.
A man was killed and 18 others were injured during the clash between the police and BNP leaders and activists at the Naya Paltan area in the capital in the afternoon.
