Exercise is essential for mental and physical well-being. Beyond weight loss, it offers numerous benefits, including improved sleep quality. A study published in Psychology of Sport & Exercise highlights its impact on insomnia, a common sleep disorder.
Physical activity improves sleep
Researchers in China tracked 147 university students (ages 18–29) using activity and sleep monitors for a week. Participants were categorized based on their activity levels: moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity (LPA), and sedentary behavior.
Among them, 41 had insomnia symptoms. Their sleep quality significantly improved when they engaged in intense physical activities and reduced sedentary time. However, light activity alone didn’t enhance sleep as effectively. This suggests that high-intensity workouts are more beneficial than casual movement.
No impact on good sleepers
For those without insomnia, exercise levels didn’t significantly affect sleep quality. This finding underscores that sleep solutions vary by individual. Other factors like stress, genetics, and diet also play a role.
However, for insomniacs, switching from moderate to vigorous exercise could be a game-changer for better sleep.
