The ongoing voter list update is set to conclude on April 11. Following its completion, the Election Commission (EC) will resume the distribution of smart national identity cards, starting from April 12.
This decision was made during the EC’s recent monthly coordination meeting.
Brigadier General Mohammad Azizur Rahman Siddiqui, project director of the second phase of the Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services (IDEA) under the EC Secretariat, stated in the meeting that due to the ongoing voter list update, it might be challenging to arrange the necessary equipment for distributing the printed smart cards. Additionally, the technical equipment in the office is currently being used for the updating process. However, once this process is completed on April 11, the distribution of printed cards can be commenced.
The EC further said that, as per the latest update, the number of registered voters in the country stands at 12,37,32,274. EC plans to release another voter list in June once the ongoing door-to-door voter update process is completed. Additionally, five million new voters would be added to the list.
The EC initially launched the smart card distribution process on October 3, 2016.
