The stock market started the week on a negative note, with indices dropping on both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) on Sunday, reports UNB.
At the DSE, both the benchmark DSEX index and the Shariah-based DSES index fell by 2 points, while the blue-chip DS30 index gained 2 points. Despite this, most companies saw a drop in share prices. Out of 409 companies traded on the DSE, 138 saw price increases, 196 experienced declines, and 75 remained unchanged.
Across all sectors, the majority of companies faced declines. In the A-category, 101 companies declined, 84 gained, and 45 remained unchanged. The B-category saw 38 companies decline, 30 gain, and 11 remain unchanged. In the Z-category, 57 companies declined, 24 gained, and 19 remained unchanged out of 100 traded stocks. Most mutual funds remained unchanged, with 22 of 37 funds staying the same, 9 declining, and 6 showing gains. In government securities, 10 out of 11 declined, while only one recorded a price increase. Corporate bonds had a mixed performance, with one out of four bonds increasing, two declining, and one remaining stable.
In the DSE block market, transactions reached 16.70 crore, with 27 companies involved and 23 lakh shares exchanged. ACI Limited led this segment, trading shares worth 4.19 crore, amounting to 2.69 lakh shares. Despite the decline in indices, trading volume increased at the DSE, with total turnover rising to 415 crore from the previous session’s 401 crore.
BDCOM Online Limited topped the gainers' list, with its share price rising by 9.92%. Meanwhile, New Line Clothing Limited saw the sharpest drop, also by 9.92%.
The CSE also ended the day in the red, with the overall index falling by 24 points. Of the 190 companies traded, 73 saw gains, 93 experienced declines, and 24 remained unchanged. The CSE’s total turnover stood at 4.5 crore. Far East Finance & Investment Limited was the top gainer, rising by 10%, while National Feed Mill Limited experienced the steepest fall, dropping by 10%.
Despite early optimism, both stock exchanges closed lower, reflecting cautious sentiment among investors.
