Eight days after Eid-ul-Fitr, workers from three readymade garment (RMG) factories staged a protest in Gazipur, demanding the payment of their unpaid dues, Eid bonuses, and other arrears. The workers of the TNZ factory, located in the Mogarkhal area of Gazipur city, gathered in the afternoon and were soon joined by workers from other factories, forming a large rally, reports UNB.
The workers’ protest has been ongoing for several weeks, with demands for the payment of three months’ worth of unpaid salaries that were due before Eid. Despite the festival, each worker only received Tk 9,100, leaving their full wages and Eid bonuses unpaid. They expressed their frustration and vowed to continue protesting until they receive their full dues.
Several workers' leaders, including Md Arman Hossain, Shahin Alam, Md Shariful, and Shahidul Islam, addressed the rally, along with representatives from various labour organizations. The leaders spoke about the workers' ongoing struggles and the neglect they have faced despite their critical role in the past anti-government movement. They also highlighted the broken promises regarding salary payments.
A meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday in Dhaka between labour representatives and officials from the Ministry of Labour to discuss the matter further. The workers remain resolute, determined to continue their movement until all outstanding payments are made.
