Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA) has taken the initiative to sell eggs, chicken and other agricultural products at fair prices at 100 points in Dhaka ahead of Ramadan.
The egg market was unstable for most of the past year. The price of eggs per dozen had risen to Tk 180. Even after fixing the price, the market did not come under control. Then in November, the government allowed the import of 180 million eggs which stabilized the market somewhat. However, at the beginning of the New Year, the price of eggs increased by Tk 5 per dozen again. The price of broiler chicken has also increased.
In such a situation, BPA has taken such decision.
BPA President Sumon Howlader shared this information at a press conference organized by Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Saturday afternoon.
He said, “On the occasion of the upcoming Ramadan, through smart market management, the sale of eggs, frozen chicken and other agricultural products at fair prices is going to start at 20 points in Dhaka city from January 12 and later at 100 points in phases with limited mark up price. In addition, skilled individuals and entrepreneurs will be added to the BPA supply chain. For example, some smart students studying at Dhaka University who are interested in working with the agricultural sector and the interests of consumers and producers can join the initiative. This initiative will be more effective through their skills and enthusiasm, which will accelerate the development of the country's agricultural sector and market management."
In the tone of complaining, the BPA president said, "Corporate companies are making an additional profit of about Tk 6 thousand crore per year by selling feed and chicks. Since they control the market, the prices of eggs and chickens are not decreasing. The syndicate is not being broken yet."
He also said, "Even if the feed price decreases in the world market, the price of chickens is being unffected because it does not decrease in the domestic market. I urge the government to include marginal farmers in the policy-making meeting."
Sumon Hawlader also demanded that the supply of feed and chicks be ensured to the farmers at affordable prices.
Meanwhile, at the press conference, 10 demands were presented to the government to protect marginal farmers from bad influence of syndicates.
