Abdul Awal Mintoo, Vice-Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former President of FBCCI, said there is a huge gap between people’s expectations and its fulfillment.
“Inequality exists in every sector, including education, healthcare, and food,” he said, adding: “To reduce this, equitable distribution of surplus resources is essential.” He stressed that no one has ever take such initiatives.
He wants the country to become economically prosperous, and for that he suggests creating wealth, employment opportunities. He said: “Investment is required to achieve these goals.”
He made these statements while addressing a round table conference at Bashundhara City Conference Hall in capital titled “New Year’s Expectations” organized by Bangladesh Pratidin on Wednesday.
He said: “Social discipline is essential to foster increased investment; but, it is glaringly absent. The crime rate including juvenile crimes is increasing gradually.
“Young people are committing suicide after posting on Facebook,” he said, labeling the society as ‘unstable’.
Police who are supposed to combat crime have a higher tendency towards crime themselves, he continued.
“Drug dealers are increasing at a faster rate than ordinary businessmen. In such a reality, no one will be interested in investing in Bangladesh. They won’t feel safe.”
He furthered that if there is no investment, unemployment will increase, which will lead to more social unrest and the aggression of drugs will rise.
He said that to move the country forward, an environment for investment must be created. “Social and political stability are interconnected.” That’s why it is impossible to make one thing better leaving other behind.
