Aircraft passengers brought 46 lakh bhori equivalent to 54 tonnes of gold in the country legally in the last year which is 53 per cent more than the previous year.
The current market value of this gold is Tk around 45,000 crore.
This huge amount of gold came into the country through Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattagram.
At the same time, only the Shahjalal International Airport authority seized around 500kg or 42,915 bhori of illegal gold. However, data is not found about illegal gold seizing at Shah Amanat International Airport.
Although the legal gold channel has increased the country’s revenue, it has decreased remittance as many expatriates chose the path of gold sending instead of sending remittance due to extra profit from selling gold in the country.
National Security Intelligence in its report published in 2022 said the country’s remittance is decreasing due to the legal channel of bringing gold.
To control this situation, they suggested revision of aircraft baggage rules and increase duty on importing gold bars.
