The first FIFA group stage produced several thrilling encounters, with a number of teams securing places in the second round before the completion of all first-round fixtures. However, the tournament journey came to an early end for several nations.
Panama became the latest side to be eliminated after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ghana in a rain-soaked contest. Entering the tournament with hopes of advancing from Group L, Panama failed to secure a victory and exited the competition following consecutive defeats.
Turkiye also endured a disappointing campaign. After a heavy loss to Australia, the team struggled to recover and managed only a single goal during the remainder of the group stage. Their poor run of results ultimately led to an early exit.
Caribbean nation Haiti, returning to the tournament after a 52-year absence, was beaten 3-0 by Brazil after previously losing 1-0 to Scotland. The 83rd-ranked side was eliminated without earning a point and found it difficult to make an impact in attack.
Tunisia suffered a similar fate. Following a crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden, the team dismissed coach Sabri Lamouchi and appointed Hervé Renard in an attempt to revive its fortunes. However, a 4-0 defeat to Japan confirmed Tunisia’s second consecutive loss and ended any hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Jordan, one of the tournament’s emerging teams, displayed resilience in Group J against Argentina, Austria and Algeria. Ali Olwan scored Jordan’s first-ever goal in the competition during a 3-1 defeat to Austria. Despite their spirited performances, Jordan fell short of qualification. A first-half strike from Algeria’s Al Nizar Rashdan proved decisive in a 2-1 defeat that sent Jordan out of the tournament.
As the group stage neared its conclusion, several teams secured progression to the knockout rounds, while others turned their attention to rebuilding for future tournaments.
