An example of improving judicial efficiency has been seen as the High Court resolved 20,740 old cases in just four working days, reports BSS.
Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal told the reporter that the Chief Justice’s initiative to dispose of old cases in the High Court was commendable and should continue. He said efforts were underway to work closely with the Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court to reduce the backlog, adding that he had already met the Chief Justice with suggestions and submitted a list of 1,400 cases for quick disposal.
Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam said the special program to dispose of old criminal miscellaneous and writ cases began on May 7 under the instructions of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, with hearings held on a fixed day each week to speed up justice and reduce backlog.
He said 3,247 criminal miscellaneous and 1,765 writ cases were disposed of on May 7. On May 14, 3,842 criminal miscellaneous and 3,262 writ cases were disposed of.
On June 11, 6,199 criminal miscellaneous cases were disposed of across 14 benches of the High Court Division. On June 18, 1,884 criminal miscellaneous and 541 writ cases were disposed of.
According to the latest data, a total of 15,172 criminal miscellaneous cases and 5,568 writ cases have been disposed of in four working days since the initiative began, bringing the total to 20,740 cases in the High Court.
