Fortune Barishal captain Tamim Iqbal has been penalised for violating the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) Code of Conduct, specifically Level 1 Article 2.6, during his team’s fifth match in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 against Rangpur Riders on Thursday.
As a result of the breach, Tamim received one demerit point and a formal warning.
Match referee Neeyamur Rashid Rahul confirmed that the decision was based on the umpires' report and supporting evidence. Since Tamim did not contest the charges or sanction, no hearing was required.
“We have charged him with one demerit point along with a formal warning,” said Neeyamur.
The incident followed a dramatic finish to the match between Rangpur Riders and Fortune Barishal on Wednesday. During the post-match handshake, tensions flared as Tamim, visibly upset, appeared to confront Rangpur opener Alex Hales. Shanian Tanin, the Riders' team director, intervened and pulled Tamim away, while Mahedi Hasan restrained Hales to prevent further escalation.
Sources later revealed that Tamim was angered by a gesture Hales made during the handshake, which he perceived as disrespectful. The exchange of body language and expressions intensified the situation, leading to a heated argument. In his statement, Hales accused Tamim of making a personal remark.
