Tamim Iqbal’s illustrious international career appears to have reached its conclusion, as the former Bangladesh captain has unofficially indicated that he will not return to the national team. His last appearance came during the ODI series against New Zealand ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Since then, Tamim has been absent from the squad for various reasons. This latest revelation now puts an end to speculations about his future in international cricket.
While Tamim has not issued a formal retirement statement, his intentions were revealed in a candid moment captured on Shahid Afridi’s vlog. Afridi, during a visit to a hotel at the invitation of Mohammad Nabi, broached the topic of retirement with Nabi. While Nabi remained silent, Tamim openly responded to Afridi’s question in Urdu, stating, “From the national team.” Afridi had asked, “Tamim, you have retired, isn’t it over?” Tamim’s reply left little doubt about his decision to step away.
The announcement comes as a surprise, as Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed recently claimed that both Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were “available” for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Ahmed had even mentioned ongoing discussions to include Shakib, assuming that Tamim might also return.
Tamim’s latest statement, however, paints a different picture. Although he retired from T20 internationals in 2021, he has not formally retired from ODIs or Tests, which left the door open for a possible comeback.
Tamim’s informal declaration compels selectors to plan for a future without him. As one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, his absence marks the end of an era defined by consistent performances and leadership.
Fans and officials alike await an official confirmation, but for now, Tamim’s comments seem to have quietly closed the curtain on his national team career. While his contributions to Bangladesh cricket remain unmatched, his decision underscores the need for the team to adapt and evolve as they move forward.
