Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan said on Friday that if the opportunity comes, he is ready to enjoy T20 captaincy.
The statement came hours after BCB president Faruque Ahmed officially declared that they are looking for new T20 captain as Najmul Hossain desired not to lead the side in the shortest format.
Mehidy, who acted as interim captain in Test and ODIs in West Indies as Najmul missed the series due to injury, was leading Khulna Tigers against Dhaka Capitals when Faruque made the announcement and seemed enjoying it as he helped his side earn a 20-run win with his man of the match performance- picking three wickets for six runs in his four overs.
“Look, when the opportunity comes, it is important to enjoy it,” Mehidy said, when asked whether he is ready to take T20 captaincy.
“I did captaincy in the West Indies as well as doing here and this (leading a side) is not new for me. Doing captaincy is like a habit and if you give gap for a long time in that case you might have to think a bit more while taking a decision but if you continue to be in it (doing captaincy) in that case you can take some good decision like you can improve you can do that but what I feel is that I always try to enjoy it (captaincy),” he said.
“In T20 you have to take decision very quickly and the new laws of ICC to change the over and start bowling within one minute is difficult like lot of time you have to do the field setting and to do that with one is difficult and so it is important to take decision quickly,” he said.
“Look T20 (captaincy) is totally a decision of the board and the one thing is that because I am leading in the BPL and if the board feel they will give me or they have better (option) like Litton Das did well in captaincy in the series against West Indies and the team also did result so the decision is entirely depended on the board but yes because I am leading in the BPL it is becoming a habit and it will help me in the future,” he said.
“Not only in T20 but in any format if the opportunity comes (to lead the side) it is becoming a habit and coming to lead out of nowhere is difficult and that happened in West Indies like I had to lead suddenly because Shanto was sick and it was difficult for me but for a long time or in a tournament like BPL where I am leading I know that I will be leading in 12 to 14 games and I can plan accordingly. It is difficult to do captaincy coming out of nowhere,” he added.
