BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed expressed confidence that Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP, will indeed return to Bangladesh. However, the necessary conditions for his return have not yet been established, suggesting it may take some more time.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his return from London on Sunday (Jan 5).
Salahuddin Ahmed said that the constitution cannot be abrogated, and the only viable approach is to amend and modify the current constitution.
When asked about his discussions with Tarique Rahman, he assured that further details would emerge gradually, adding that the acting chairman has emphasized the importance of national unity.
The anti-fascist unity currently emerging in Bangladesh should be implemented through a democratic process. Any attempt to delay the election will be thwarted by the people. Therefore, we must swiftly advance towards establishing a political government through democratic means. Reforms should not take that much time. Reforms and election preparations must be based on national unity, while also maintaining a focus on the democratic process, he said.
Salahuddin added that it is crucial to provide a proper roadmap after consulting with everyone. While welcoming the emergence of new political forces, he emphasized that it should not resemble a "King's Party" scenario.
He left Dhaka for London on Dec 20 and had been staying at his eldest daughter's house there.
