The Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma is going through a tough phase in Test cricket as his poor performance with the bat has sparked discussions and criticism. Things are getting even worse as it is unlikely that he will play the last match of the Border–Gavaskar Trophy.
According to a report by the Indian Express, Rohit will be rested for the final Test against Australia, with Jasprit Bumrah set to lead the team at the toss.
Fast bowler Bumrah had earlier captained the side in the first Test of the series in Perth. India won that match, which remains their only victory in the four Tests played so far.
The report stated that Rohit has already informed coach Gautam Gambhir and selector Ajit Agarkar about his decision, and both have accepted it.
The Indian Express further reported that the recent Melbourne Test might have been Rohit’s last Test match for India. It remains uncertain whether he will be considered for the squad if India qualifies for the ICC World Test Championship final.
On Thursday, during a fielding practice session in Sydney, coach Gambhir was seen talking to Bumrah for a long time. Rohit did practice batting in the nets but did not take part in slip fielding drills.
Rohit also skipped the pre-match press conference, which was attended by Gambhir. When asked about Rohit’s place in the playing eleven, the coach did not give a definitive answer.
Notably, Rohit missed the first Test against Australia due to the birth of his second child. He returned for the second Test but batted at number six instead of opening. However, he resumed his role as an opener in the Melbourne Test but failed to find form with the bat.
Australia currently leads the five-match series 2-1 after four Tests. However, India still has a chance to retain the series title if they win the Sydney Test.
